The pre-study abroad process can be overwhelming. Trust me, I've been there too. But I am here to tell you: do not worry!
Here is what I would tell myself before my semester abroad:
Utilize your resources: There are many opportunities to go abroad, whether it be by studying, interning, or volunteering. Start early and use the resources at your university and/or your study abroad program to explore options. These professionals are ready to help make your process as easy as possible!
Be open to new opportunities: Before my search, I would have never expected myself to do an internship abroad, let alone did I know where Valencia, Spain even was. Keeping my options opened my eyes up to new opportunities that I did not even know existed. This has become one of the biggest life lessons because Valencia ended up being the perfect study abroad city for me.
Start early to obtain necessary documents: U.S. Passport processing times can take up to 10 weeks so be sure to apply early for a new passport or check your current passport expiration date. Additionally, foreign visa processing times differ per country so check your host country’s requirements with much in advance.
Learn basic language skills & cultural customs: As you will soon be departing for your study abroad, do not forgot that you are entering a new country. Remember that not everyone may know how to speak your language and it is important to respect their culture norms. Culture shocks are normal, but you can reduce this by learning about your host country's culture before arriving.
Pack light: This one gets a lot of students because of course you want to bring all your favorite items, right? The best advice I received was to pack light and only bring the essentials!
These are the 5 most important tips I wish I was told when preparing for my semester abroad... and do not forget, have fun!
